Frequently Asked Questions

  • Q. I am not a United Kingdom citizen. Can I get married in Jersey?
    A. If you, or the other party to the marriage are not United Kingdom citizens, you need to make sure that the laws in your own country are observed, to ensure that any marriage contracted in Jersey is recognised. You should seek the advice of the consul for your own country.

If you are a citizen from outside the European Economic Area, and you wish to marry a British Citizen you should ensure that your immigration status permits you to marry. You must also check that you have the necessary immigration clearance before coming to Jersey.

Further information can be obtained from the Customs and Immigration Department at Maritime House, La Route du Port Elizabeth, St Helier, Jersey, JE1 1JD.

  • Q. How much does it cost to register a birth?
    A. The registration of the birth is free, but a certified extract from the Register (a birth certificate) may be obtained from the registrar of the parish in which the birth took place on payment of a fee of £10.00 for a full birth certificate, and £5.00 for a shortened form birth certificate.

  • Q. How soon do I need to register a birth?
    A. The birth of every child born in the Island must be registered with the registrar of the parish in which the birth took place within a period of 21 days from the birth.

If the birth is not registered within the 21 day period, but provided that fewer than six months have elapsed since the birth, the birth must be registered in the presence of the Superintendent Registrar as well as the parish registrar, and the reason for the delay in registering the birth must be provided to the Superintendent Registrar.

After six months, registration can only be effected by an Order of the Royal Court.

  • Q. I am under eighteen. Can I get married?
    A. Only if you are over the age of 16, and have the written consent of both parents or guardians.  People under the age of 16 are not allowed to marry.

  • Q. Can you give me some information on registering a death?
    A. Every death that occurs in the Island must be registered by the registrar of the parish in which the death occurred within a period of five days from the date of death.

If an inquest or post-mortem examination is ordered, the period of five days for registration is extended.

The registration of the death is free, but a certified extract from the death register (a death certificate) can be obtained from the registrar of the parish in which the death occurred on payment of £10.00.
