States Tenants Conference

 Tuesday 17 April 2007 , Don Theatre Fort Regent 7.00 p.m.

States tenants will discuss how they could benefit from taking part in a Jersey Tenants Forum at a conference taking place at Fort Regent next week.

They’ll be addressed by two UK council tenants who are long-standing participants in similar schemes in Brighton and Hove. John Joliffe and Linda King are both people who have been involved in many tenants’ groups and panels, either as chairman or as members. They are both involved in the tenant participation movement at the highest level, making decisions for tenants in their communities aimed at improving the quality of life for the individuals who live in them.

Jersey’s Housing Department is committed to providing good opportunities for participation to all tenants, allowing them to be involved in the service the department provides.

Tenant participation first came to Jersey in 2004 following a visit to the UK by ‘TP’ officers Charlie Barratt and Pat McDonald. Since then it has gone from strength to strength. The department now has several resident groups and panels working in partnership on behalf of the tenants. It is envisaged that representatives from these groups will form the Jersey Tenants Forum and will be involved in consultation and decision making with the department on behalf of tenants Island wide.

Jersey’s TP officers continue to travel to the UK and have a network of valuable contacts including many council tenants. The information they collect is helping to model participation schemes in Jersey. John Jolliffe and Linda King are two of the contacts they have made and they have agreed to come to Jersey to speak to members of Resident Associations and Panels to share their experiences and explain the benefits of tenant participation.

Housing Minister Senator Terry Le Main said he hoped the conference would be the first of many, with the aim of enabling tenants to become fully involved in decision making with the Housing Department.
