Looking for work

Refreshing your skills or learning new ones can increase your chances of finding a job.

Stages of your career

Careers Jersey offers advice at all stages of your working life, from post-16 or 18+, to mature students. Your first job might be your first introduction to Jersey’s Social Security system, which is an insurance scheme. By paying money into a central fund, people can make sure they will get help if they need it.

Apprenticeships and internships

If you're just starting work or looking to change career, the Jersey Apprenticeship Scheme provides you and your employer with support, training and recognised qualifications in numerous areas. If you're a student, you could take part in the Jersey internship programme and find a challenging and meaningful work placement in a Jersey business over your summer holiday.

Changing career

Whether you're looking for another job out of choice or you've been made redundant, you might consider a career change. Many of the skills you already have will be transferable - try to demonstrate how you’re flexible and adaptable and write your CV so that a new employer will look at your relevant skills and experience rather than just the job titles you’ve had.

If you're returning to work after a career break, think creatively about what skills you have. You might have gained them in previous jobs, voluntary work or in the home. If you’re returning to work after taking a break to care for your children, the Jersey Childcare Trust can advise you on other options for child care.

Choosing or changing your career

Jersey has many recruitment agencies. Some list current vacancies on their website or invite you to register for updates. The Jersey Evening Post carries job adverts and also lists them on their website, as does Jersey Insight.

As many as 75% of jobs are never advertised. If you approach an organisation, or someone recommends you for a job, make sure you understand what they do, and give the organisation a clear picture of what you could contribute.

Special employment needs

Workwise, part of Social Security's Work Zone, helps people who have a special employment need into suitable work. Job coaches can advise on employment options, help with the application process and provide ongoing support. Training is also available, for example to help build confidence and improve computer skills.

Retraining

A new job may mean you'll need to retrain. The Work Zone and Careers Jersey team (both situated within the Social Security Department) can help with training opportunities and arrange courses to help people re-enter the job market with confidence.

Some development opportunities are free, for example the materials on the Open University’s OpenLearn web site. A number of organisations offer training and the Jersey Library is full of resources for learning.
