Liberation Day Photo Hunt is launched

05 May 2015

Young people are being asked to take photos that capture the spirit of Liberation 70 as part of a special competition that is being held over the day.

The Société Jersiaise will give 70 youngsters up to the age of 18 a camera containing a roll of 35mm film. When the cameras have been handed back to the Société Jersiaise, the films will be processed, printed and digitised to create a unique archive of memories of Liberation 70 created by 70 young people of Jersey.

Exhibition of images taken

Société Jersiaise Photographic Archivist, Gareth Syvret, said “Photography was banned during the Occupation and those rare images we do have of the Liberation by islanders are precious. It seems fitting that we are asking our young people to capture Liberation 70 on film.

"Most young people today will have only ever used a digital camera. Using film is a bit tougher so we’re not looking for technical quality so much as capturing the spirit of the day. We plan to create an exhibition of 70 of the best images later 2015.”

Société Jersiaise International Photographer in Residence 2015 Tom Pope who will be on hand to offer photographic tips has prepared an exciting set of subject, challenges and ideas for participants to look for which will be handed out with the cameras on Liberation Day.

“We will be looking for the images that best capture a sense of liberation, and we are sure that the young people will have a great time looking for unusual shots, and will be very creative in their approach,” he said.

Competition for best images

There will be a competition for the best images to be judged by Education Minister Deputy Rod Bryans, Gareth Syvret and Photographer in Residence Tom Pope. The competition has been sponsored by Fotosound, who have donated cameras as prizes.

The overall winner will receive a Nikon Coolpix S3700 camera. The person aged 12 or younger who takes the best photo will win a Nikon Coolpix L31, and the best under-18 will win a place on the Archisle Photo Academy at Youth Arts Jersey with Tom Pope during the summer half-term.

Entering competition

Anyone under the age of 18 can enter by printing off the form on the Société Jersiaise website. The cameras will be handed out to the first 70 young people to submit the form, and they will be expected to return the camera by the end of Thursday 14 May.
