First Liberation 70 tickets available

02 March 2015

Islanders who have an association with the Occupation are invited to contact their parish hall to apply for the free tickets to attend the Liberation 70 ceremony in People’s Park on Saturday 9 May.

The first set of free tickets for the celebrations to mark the 70th anniversary of Liberation Day are now available at all 12 parishes.

To qualify for this first set of free tickets, Islanders applying must:

  • have been in Jersey during the Occupation
  • evacuated or interned during the Occupation, or
  • serving in HM Armed Forces during the Occupation

Attendees, who will be seated in marquees during the ceremony, will be able to bring a partner/carer with them. Further information on the arrangements is included in the application form.

Formal events and tea party

The Liberation 70 formal events at People's Park will include a States meeting, the freedom ceremony, a creative production featuring music, readings and archive footage, and a flag raising ceremony.

These formal events, which will be held in the presence of Her Royal Highness The Countess of Wessex, will be followed by a Liberation tea party and informal entertainment.

The Bailiff, William Bailhache, said “I hope that all Islanders are able to attend the special 70th Anniversary arrangements for Liberation in People’s Park and it is particularly important that these arrangements include those most closely associated with the Occupation and Liberation between 1940-1945.

"More than 1,300 Islanders attended the 65th Anniversary celebrations in 2010, and I hope that a similarly large number might also attend this year. I am keen to ensure that these Islanders are at the heart of the formal and informal events that are taking place, and that they can be accommodated comfortably at the event in People’s Park so that they, together with all others attending, can fully enjoy their day, which will be held in the presence of HRH The Countess of Wessex.”

Applications

As well as being available to download, application forms can be obtained from all parish halls. Islanders have until Friday 10 April 2015 to return their completed applications to the parish in which they currently reside.

Free tickets for public seating will be available from Wednesday 15 April 2015 and information on how to obtain these will be announced closer to the date. The 70th Anniversary Liberation event will be open to everyone and there will be plenty of space to cater for those who wish to enjoy the festivities without being seated as well.
