Retailers invited to participate in new e-bike grant scheme

13 August 2019

Bike shops are being urged to register with a new scheme which will offer islanders grant assistance when they are buying e-bikes.

From today (Tuesday, 13 August), bicycle retailers can register with the e-bike grant scheme, which will enable them to reclaim £150 from the Government of Jersey when they sell an e-bike to islanders who have successfully applied.

A list of approved retailers will be published as part of the scheme’s launch to the public next   Monday, 19 August. From that date, islanders will be able to apply for a £150 grant for a new or second-hand e-bike – a bicycle with a battery-powered motor which boosts pedal-power.

Jersey’s first e-bike grant scheme, car2cycle, was launched in 2016 and resulted in more than 500 grants being given to islanders to help them reduce the cost of their power-assisted pedal cycle.

Deputy Kevin Lewis, Minister for Infrastructure, said: “The previous e-bike grant scheme was very successful and as a result we have received a number of requests to launch another scheme to incentivise the purchase of electric bikes by offering grant assistance. Several retailers have already registered, and I would urge any outlet which sells e-bikes to get involved.

“This scheme is a small step towards getting islanders to use sustainable forms of transport and will support our ambition of reducing carbon emissions.”
