Anti-discrimination law for tenants proposed

​The Minister for Social Security, Deputy Judy Martin has launched a public consultation to amend the Discrimination Law to include a ban on landlords from discriminating against tenants with children.

The consultation will ask Islanders to provide feedback. Once the results are known, the Minister will bring a Proposition to the States Assembly to amend the law. This is likely to be before the summer recess.

If the amendments to the Law are approved, landlords will not be able to let their properties with a 'no children' clause in a tenancy agreement. Landlords and their agents will also not be able to advertise a property to let with a "no children" condition.

Minister for Social Security, Deputy Judy Martin said: "We need to make sure that all tenants are treated fairly. Those with children should not be treated any differently.

"As part of the Government's aim to continue making Jersey a family friendly place to live and putting children first, I am committed to making this possible and ensuring that children in Jersey have the best possible start to life. That includes having a decent roof over their heads."
