Regulation of Public Appointments consultation

14 January 2022

shadow people

Proposals for a new Jersey Public Appointments Commission have been published today for public consultation.

The proposed changes to the law would see the existing Jersey Appointments Commission (JAC) replaced with a new Commission which sits outside of government and hence has enhanced legal independence.

The new Commission would, like the JAC, oversee recruitment to senior public roles, ensuring that selection to such roles is fair, efficient and conducted in accordance with best practice principles.

Its remit would also be expanded to enable it to oversee the recruitment of appointments made by all of Jersey's public bodies, except the parishes.  Furthermore, the law would provide the States Assembly with the powers to extend the functions of the Commission in future.

This new legislation would ensure that the selection of public appointees, including to the Island's most important and influential roles, is regulated in a wholly independent and transparent way, outside of Government.

The consultation will run until Monday 14 February 2022.  Comments are welcome from members of the public and all professional stakeholders.
