Jersey Met issues Orange snow warning

09 January 2024

The Jersey Met Office has issued orange warnings for ice and snow across Jersey and the other Channel Islands.

Further sleet or snow showers are possible from now through into Wednesday morning, with air and ground temperatures expected to remain below freezing in places. There is a significant risk of icy patches, particularly on untreated surfaces.

In terms of snowfall accumulations, there is the potential for 3-5cm on higher ground, grass, fields and smaller lanes, with 1-2cm expected at sea level.

Air and ground temperatures are anticipated to increase slightly during the day, which will help main roads remain wet for the time being. However, temperatures are expected to fall below freezing again this evening.

Schools

Some schools have taken the decision to offer an early pick up today (9 January) to help parents and carers with the ongoing weather impacts and local conditions – this has and will continue to be directly communicated via the schools.

A meeting will be held at 05.45am tomorrow (10 January) to assess the conditions in relation to school travel. Parents and guardians will be informed of closures by their school's headteacher. In the event that parents and guardians are not contacted by their school, they should assume the school will be open as usual.

Safety measures

Drive cautiously:

  • Exercise extreme caution when driving, as roads and footpaths may be slippery
  • Footpaths are not treated, so please tread carefully

Check on others:

  • Take a moment to check on the vulnerable and elderly in your community, ensuring they have what they need to stay warm and safe

Further updates will be provided later this afternoon regarding the latest weather forecasts.
