Upcoming Weather Alert and preparatory measures

Jersey Met has provided an update at 3pm on weather conditions for today, Thursday 4 January 2024. 

Rainfall: 

  • Rainfall so far today (as at 2pm) has been at Masion St Louis – 4.7mm and Howard David Farm – 6.8mm. 
  • Further showers are forecast later this afternoon and this evening, perhaps heavy at times. 
  • Most likely rainfall today around 10-15 mm in total, including the rainfall from this morning.

Wind: 

  • A RED wind warning was issued at 8.48am and updated at 3.33pm for the Channel Island Shipping Area. 
  • Strong and gusty winds area expected to affect the Channel Islands from late afternoon into the early evening. 
  • For Jersey winds will be force 6 to 7, becoming southwest to west force 7 to gale force 8 early evening, briefly severe gale force 9 with gusts to 60mph. 
  • Peak winds are forecast for early evening, 5 to 7pm. 

Preparatory Actions:

  • Following the Tactical Coordination Group (TCG) meeting this afternoon, there is a reduced risk of flooding in low lying areas. 
  • Islanders are advised to exercise caution while travelling, especially during peak wind at rush hour this evening due to potential vulnerabilities in structures and trees from Storm Ciaran. 
  • Teams from Jersey Met, Infrastructure & Environment, States of Jersey Fire and Rescue Service, States of Jersey Police and Honorary Police, Jersey Water, and Andium have initiated precautionary measures to mitigate the potential impact of any flooding. These will remain in place overnight, should there be any change to the forecast.​
