Toxicology
|
Investigations into sudden deaths frequently involve toxicological analysis to determine the presence of fatal levels of drugs or pharmaceuticals. Post mortem specimens of blood and other body fluids are submitted to the laboratory by the pathologists and a wide range of analytical techniques are used to determine the levels of drugs and pharmaceuticals that are present. The results of this analysis are then interpreted at the inquest.
Work relating to being 'drunk in charge' of a motor vehicle is also a form of toxicology. This has decreased since the introduction of breath testing equipment at police headquarters but blood analysis is still necessary for borderline cases and when the Intoxyliser is not available. Expert evidence is also given to the Courts in cases involving alleged drinking after driving but prior to arrest. The laboratory is also increasingly seeing cases of drugged driving. |

Analysis of urine samples for traces of drugs is carried out not only for prison and enforcement agencies but also as a distinctly separate service for the Alcohol and Drugs Service of the Department of Health and Social Services. This service helps not only with keeping drugs out of the prison, but also gives confidence the Alcohol and drugs Service that treatment regimes are being maintained. |
