The results are then forwarded to the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) for inclusion in the Good Beach Guide for the following year.

The Bathing Water Directive contains two main types of water quality standard: The Imperative Standard which all member states must achieve and the more stringent Guide Standard, which the member states should endeavour to achieve.

Interpretation of data (pdf, size: 22Kb)

In 2007, 16 out of the 16 Jersey beaches tested *, passed the EU Bathing Water Directive Imperative Standard (100%), whilst 7 of the 16 bathing waters passed the stringent Guide standard (44%)

Link to Information about the Directive

A revised EU Bathing Water Directive came into force in Europe on 26 March 2006 with each member state having a two year period to transpose into national laws.  Although Jersey is not a member state of the EU, the Island’s government (The States) will strive to achieve compliance with the provisions of the revised Bathing Water Directive.  A summary of the main differences with the previous Bathing Water Directive can be found by clicking on the link below.

Changes to the Directive (pdf, size: 32Kb)

Article 3(1) of the revised Bathing Water Directive requires bathing waters to be identified on an annual basis.  The 16 bathing waters monitored since 2004 are: La Haule, Victoria Pool, Havre des Pas, Green Island, Grouville, Archirondel, Rozel, Bouley Bay, Bonne Nuit, Greve de Lecq, Plemont, Watersplash, Le Braye, Beauport, St Brelade, and Portelet.  These bathing waters will also be monitored in 2008.  Please contact Environmental Protection on 441600 with any comments or suggestions regarding these bathing waters.

Under Article 3(1) of the revised Bathing Water Directive the length of the bathing season is to be defined each year.  The 2008 bathing season shall therefore commence on Monday 19 May and end on Tuesday 30 September.

It is also a requirement of the revised Bathing Water Directive (Article 3(4)) to annually establish a monitoring calendar to identify days when water samples will be collected.  The monitoring calendar for 2008 is set out below.
