Jersey Meteorological Department
The Jersey Meteorological Department, based at Jersey Airport, has been forecasting the weather since the early 1950’s. Originally intended to service the needs of the Airport, observing and forecasting the weather for aircraft arriving and departing Jersey, the Department has expanded to become the Weather Centre for the Channel Islands providing forecasts to a wide range of customers in Jersey, Guernsey and the other Channel Islands, including those involved with aviation, shipping, agriculture, building, construction, the media and of course to the general public through our “Weather To Go!” telephone, e-mail and fax services.
The Department works closely with the United Kingdom Meteorological Office and receives a wealth of meteorological information and data for Europe and the North Atlantic on an almost continuous basis, enabling instantaneous up to date weather information to be available any time of the day or night.
Headed by Principal Meteorological Officer Tony Pallot, his team of 19 staff record, observe and forecast the weather for the full 24 hour period of the day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year (Christmas day included!). The Department is also responsible for the observing programmes at the Maison St. Louis Observatory, where records go back to 1894, at Fort Regent, the official sunshine station for Jersey and Mont Orgueil, where another sunshine recorder is installed. The Department is also plays a vital role in ensuring the safety of aircraft operations across the Channel with its Weather Radar based at La Moye providing continual surveillance for thunderstorms, squalls and other severe weather in the area.
As well as observing and forecasting the weather the Department also compiles the weather statistics and climatological data for Jersey, available in our annual report, and takes a keen interest in monitoring the effects of global warming and climate change.
