Working with the Courts
Probation Officers prepare written and verbal reports to
give the courts an accurate picture of the attitude and
behaviour of offenders.
Probation Reports assist the courts to decide upon
suitable sentencing for offenders.
The Probation Service prepare almost 600 reports for Jersey
Courts a year.

Working with Victims of Crime
Protecting the Public is the priority of the Probation Service.
The Chief Probation Officer actively assists in the management of the Jersey Victim Support Scheme.
The Probation Service works in partnership with Jersey’s Child Protection Agencies to safeguard the welfare of young people.

The main aim of the Jersey Probation Service is
to actively contribute towards a reduction in crime.
Working with Offenders
Offenders receive one-to-one supervision by Probation
Officers.
Offenders attend programmes that apply to them, including
aggression control, domestic violence, drug and alcohol
abuse, and changing an offender’s attitude to
crime. Programmes of this type have been shown to reduce
reoffending.
In partnership with other agencies, the Probation Service
helps offenders get back on track through employment,
training and education.

by assisting offenders to change their behaviour.
Working with the Community
The Probation Service monitors offenders placed on Community Service Orders.
This is an alternative to a prison sentence and offenders are required to carry out unpaid work for the community.
Community Service saves the public the expense of paying for the offender to be in prison and enables many hours of work to be carried out free of charge.
Community Service benefited, among others, St James Street Hostel, States Environmental Services, the Boys Brigade and the Market Garden in St Mary which provides free vegetables for charitable organisations.

Offenders on community Service performed over
10,000 hours of unpaid work for the community last
year.

Working with Young Offenders
The Probation Service provides support to the Parishes and
the honorary system in dealing with Offenders appearing at
Parish Hall Enquiries.
Voluntary Supervision can be provided by Probation Officers
and offers an alternative to expensive court proceedings for
young offenders.
The Probation Service supports measures that allow young
people to face the consequences of their actions, without
the harmful effects that a criminal conviction would have on
their future prospects.

The Probation Service actively seeks to deal with
certain offenders outside the formal court system,
helping to speed up justice and save the taxpayer
money.
