Q - How does the Scheme work?

A. Choose a dentist, give him or her a call and make an appointment mentioning the Jersey Dental Scheme. The dentist may charge you for this appointment, so do ask whether there will be a charge and if so, how much it will be.

  • On your first visit the dentist will examine your teeth, to see if you are dentally fit and assess the general health of your teeth and gums. Your dentist may tell you that you need some treatment before he or she can accept you as a patient under the Scheme. If you are attending the Community Dental Service this treatment will be free, but otherwise you will have to pay the full costs.
  • If the dentist agrees to accept you as a patient under the Scheme, he or she will tell you the monthly fee you will have to pay. This will cover all routine treatment while you are in the Scheme.
  • Every month, the States will pay an amount towards the cost of your treatment. This is called the States’ subsidy. You will pay the rest of the cost.
  • If your dentist sets a monthly fee of say £11 per month and the States’ subsidy is say £6 a month, you would only have to pay the remaining £5 a month.

Q - How can you join the Scheme?

A. To join, simply fill in the application form which your dentist will have. There is nothing more for you to do – your dentist will return the form to the Jersey Dental Scheme to enrol you as a member.

As soon as you receive details of your membership of the Scheme, all you have to do is make regular appointments to see your dentist.

Remember: the monthly payment will cover all the routine dental care you receive.

The States’ subsidy and any payment you make are used only for your dental treatment. None of it is spent on administration.

Q - What is Routine Dental Care?

A. Routine dental care includes all the following treatments given in normal surgery hours.

  • Examination and report including all necessary scaling and polishing of teeth and treatment of sensitive dentine
  • Routine X-Rays taken inside the mouth
  • Emergency first aid treatment of a dying tooth
  • Treatment of acute infection or pain
  • Re-cementing a crown or inlay
  • Re-cementing a bridge
  • Construction and fitting of a temporary crown
  • Stopping abnormal bleeding including aftercare and removing stitches
  • Easing of dentures, but not including laboratory fees
  • Removing stitches put in by another dentist
  • Routine extractions under local anaesthetic
  • Routine preventative dentistry
  • Routine fillings

Or perhaps it’s easier to state what’s not included:

  • Crowns or bridges
  • Dentures (making or adding to)
  • Surgical removal of impacted wisdom teeth
  • General anaesthesia
  • Root fillings
  • Straightening of teeth
  • Minor oral surgery
  • Cosmetic surgery

Q - Who can join the Scheme?

A. You can join the Scheme if you are between 11 and 18, or 21 if you

remain in full-time education and:

  • The total family income is below the prescribed limit *
  • You have lived in Jersey for a continuous period of at least five years, or have been in full-time education in Jersey for at least two years and
  • A dentist is willing to have you as a patient in the Scheme

*for this purpose the ‘family income’ is that of parents or guardians

  • Or if you are between 16 and 18 working and living in the family home, it is your own income which is considered.

Q - Are all dentists involved in the Scheme?

A. Most, but not all. A list of dentists taking part in the Scheme is available from the Administrators at the address on the back of this leaflet.

Q - How do you pay?

A. There are three ways to pay the monthly fee:

  • The easiest way is by direct debit. All you need to do is fill in the ‘instructions to your bank’ section on your application form, and the payment will automatically be paid from your bank account each month,
  • If you prefer you can pay for six months or a year in advance by sending a cheque payable to the Jersey Dental Scheme with your application form.
  • If you don’t have a bank account you can pay cash into any branch of HSBC Bank, using the paying-in slips we will give you.
  • If you make your cash payment at any bank other than HSBC, you may be charged. You can not claim this back from the Scheme.

Once you’re in the Scheme

Q - What if you want to change dentists?

A. After you have joined the Scheme you can still change your dentist. You would need to send us a new application form filled in by you and your new dentist, and at the same time tell us you will no longer be seeing your old dentist. We can then change our records,

Q - What if you don’t make the monthly payments?

A. If you fall behind in your monthly payments by TWO months you will no longer be a member of the scheme.

You will have to pay your dentist the full price for all further treatment.

Q - What if you want to leave the Scheme?

A. If you want to leave the Scheme, simply write to us. We will let

your dentist know and then you will be charged for all further

treatment in the usual way.
