Housing Information
To preserve its environment and manage housing stocks, Jersey places restrictions upon the ability to purchase and lease private dwelling accommodation.
The majority of people who come to work in Jersey are restricted to living in "unqualified" accommodation. This could be accommodation in a registered Lodging House, or in private lodgings (a residentially qualified occupier may accommodate up to five persons for reward). Lodgers in such accommodation may not enter into any form of lease, do not have security of tenure and can therefore, be asked to vacate at any time without notice. An Agreement and Code of Practice for Landlords and Lodgers, which is a compulsory requirement for registration as a Lodging house, has been recently introduced.
Some additional, limited provisions exist within the Housing Law which enable a person coming to Jersey to live in controlled or "qualified" accommodation. These provisions relate to being essentially employed where a suitable local candidate cannot be found, or bringing significant economic or social benefit to the Island. Some hardship provisions also exist.
