Fire safety education in schools

​​Educating children about fire safety

The Jersey Fire and Rescue Service is committed to educating children and young people in fire safety skills and responsible citizenship. To support this ambition we have developed a fire safety education programme to provide these essential life skills to the Island's school children, fully supported by Education Sport and Culture.

Below is an overview of our education programme, outlining which fire safety skills are taught at what level, the key areas covered and who delivers the input.

Nursery / reception: big fire engine activity box

Subjects included:

  • smoke alarms
  • 999
  • stop, drop and roll
  • hot dangers

Delivered by: nursery / reception teachers and staff

Years 1 and 2: people who help us and the Great Fire of London

Teacher delivery packs:

  • what we do
  • how we help
  • Jersey Fire and Rescue Service DVD
  • spotting hazards
  • history of the fire service, old to new
  • modern fire service

Delivered by: teaching staff

Year 4: SPARKS

Subjects included:

  • hoax calling​
  • know your address
  • escape plans
  • hazards around the home
  • stop, drop and roll
  • smoke alarms
  • get out, stay out, call 999

Delivered by: Jersey Fire and Rescue Service operational crews

Year 5: safety in action

Subjects included:

  • escape plan
  • close doors
  • travel through smoke
  • smoke alarms / testing your smoke alarm
  • get out, stay out, call 999
  • hazards in the home

Delivered by: Jersey Fire and Rescue Service - Community Fire Safety department with support from operational firefighters

Year 6 - Prison! Me! No Way!! - your choice days: plan your escape

Subjects included:

  • house fire DVD
  • spread of fire
  • escape plans
  • bedtime routines
  • hazards in the house
  • know your address
  • close doors
  • get out, stay out, call 999

Year 8 - Prison! Me! No Way!! - crime days: feel the heat

Subjects included:

  • looking at the consequences of hoax calling and fire setting
  • consequences of actions
  • criminal activity
  • who does it affect
  • DVD footage of hoax calling and fire setting
