Speed Limits

On 15 March 2005, the States approved the Transport and Technical Services proposed policy for speed limits (subject to an amendment from the Connetable of St Helier).

Requests for changes to speed limits will be considered in line with the policy which in summary is as follows:

• 40 mph all island maximum speed limit, (30 mph all island maximum speed limit for vehicles over 3.5t laden weight or towing trailers);
• 30 mph for built up urban areas;
• 20 mph in housing estates, and discrete residential areas, with little or no through traffic (or other areas such as would be agreed following  consultation between individual Parishes and Transport and Technical Services – Connetables of St Helier’s amendment);
• Part time electronically signed 20 mph speed limits at schools, to apply only at school opening and closing times.
• 15mph to continue to apply to green lanes, at least until a review of the green lane system has been carried out.
