Roads maintenance

The road network is vital to an Island with so much traffic, and the maintenance and improvement of highways and footpaths is a continual and essential service. The management of the system including the coordination of trench openings by service companies is equally necessary.

Through the Transport and Technical Services Department, the Highways Maintenance unit is responsible for maintaining the Island's 160 miles of main road and coordinating the needs of the Island's service companies - gas, electricity, telecommunications, water and drains - which require around 1,000 trench openings each year. The unit consults parish authorities, the Police, bus companies and delivery services to establish alternative routeing for traffic and to maintain access to premises - all essential considerations when main roads are closed. Once work by the service companies is completed the section then ensures that reinstatement of the roads is correctly carried out.
