Keeping or exchanging registration numbers

Registration numbers are the property of the States of Jersey. However, the Inspector of Motor Traffic may allow the exchange or retention of registration number(s) in the following circumstances.

Retention of a registration number

You may want to keep a registration number if your vehicle is being:

  • permanently exported
  • destroyed
  • scrapped
  • broken up

The registered owner of a motor vehicle may retain the use of a registration number (for his or her own use) for a maximum period of 6 months.

How do I apply to retain the use of a registration number?

The application form (VRD 28) is available at Driver and Vehicle Standards (DVS) and must accompany the notification of permanent export, scrapping etc. which can be found on the rear of your vehicle registration document.

A fee of (£79.25) is charged for retaining a registration number. This is reduced to (£55.05) if the number is retained on a vehicle.

How do I apply to exchange registration numbers?

You will need to complete 2 application forms (VRD 28) one for each vehicle and submit them to Driver and Vehicle Standards (DVS) along with the registration documents for both vehicles and the fee of (£79.25) per vehicle

Registration numbers may only be exchanged between the registered owners of Jersey registered vehicles.
