If the child is living in Jersey or was born in Jersey and is currently in the UK, you may apply for their British passport through our office. You can get an application form (form B) from our office at Maritime House or from any parish hall / post office.

If the child was not born in Jersey and is living in the UK, you must apply through the UK offices. 
If the child is living abroad, you must apply through the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) Embassy, Consulate or High Commission of the country in which they are resident.

Supporting documents needed for a child born to a national of a country in the European Economic Area

We need original documents that prove the child is British. We do not accept documents which have been photocopied or laminated.

A birth certificate is not considered absolute proof of identity.

Even if the child was born in the UK, we may ask to see further documents.

If the child was born in the UK, Channel Islands or Isle of Man

We need to see the child's full birth certificate showing parents' details and one of the following:

• the mother's passport or ID card that was valid at the time of the child's birth
• the father's passport or ID card that was valid at the time of the child's birth and the parents' marriage certificate (we only need to see the parents' marriage certificate if the child was born before 1 July 2006)

If the child was born before 01 October 2000

You will need to provide evidence that one of the legitimate parents was present in the UK, Channel Islands or Isle of Man as an EEA national exercising a treaty right at the time of the child’s birth.

If the child was born on or after 1 October 2000 and before 30 April 2006

You will need to provide evidence that one of the legitimate parents had been given indefinite leave to remain by the Jersey Customs and Immigration Service before the child’s birth. 

This will be in the form of a stamp in their passport or in the form of a letter issued to them by the Jersey Customs & Immigration Service.

If the child was born on or after 30 April 2006

You must be able to prove that one of the legitimate parents had five years continuous residency in the UK, Channel Islands or Isle of Man as an EEA national exercising a treaty right, before the child’s birth.

As evidence of the parent’s residency, you will need to provide a print out of their contributions record from Social Security and documentary evidence from another independent source.

This would normally be letters from the parent’s employers stating:

• when they started work with them
• that they were employed on a continuous basis
• when they left their employment or that they are still employed by them

If they had more than one employer during the five year qualifying period, you will need to get a letter from every employer that they worked for during those five years.

If they were not working at any time during the qualifying period, we would accept letters from their landlords at that time to confirm their residency.

If they were not residing in Jersey for the whole of their qualifying period, please get in touch with our office for further advice.

If the child was born outside the UK, Channel Islands or Isle of Man but has a certificate of registration

We need to see the:

• registration certificate
• passport on which the child entered the UK
