Notices of Assessment and the Income Tax Instalment System (ITIS)
1. What should I do when I receive the Notice of Assessment?
Check it to make sure you agree with the income, expenses and allowances you have been given.
2. What can I do if I do not agree with the figures?
You can appeal to the Comptroller of Income Tax in writing within 40 days of the date on the notice giving:
- The reason for your appeal;
- The amount which you believe you should have been charged;
- Details of any extra information you will deliver to the tax office which supports your appeal.
3. There is no balance or amount to pay on the Notice of Assessment. How do I check to make sure my tax liability will be paid by the year end?
Look at your pay slips. Check that the payments made to date plus the remaining deductions until December, cover your tax. If you do not have your pay slips you can return the barcode slip at the bottom of the Notice of Assessment to us. We will then send you a schedule of your ITIS deductions for 2007 received to date.
4. I have worked out my deductions to the year end and it looks like I will overpay. What do I do?
Provide us with your latest pay slip. We will then recalculate your effective rate for the remainder of the year. Please note that if you have any outstanding tax from previous years, part of your deductions will be going towards that amount.
5. I can see from my latest pay slip that I have already overpaid.
A repayment of overpaid tax can be made on request. It will normally take about 10 days for a cheque to be issued. If you do not contact us any overpayment will be carried forward to next year.
6. I am an employee with no other sources of income and it looks like my tax will not be covered once the December ITIS deductions have been received.
Contact this Office for assistance. We may be able to roll forward the underpayment to the following year and calculate a higher effective rate to collect the outstanding balance. Alternatively it might be appropriate to voluntarily increase your rate now or make a one off payment.
7. I am an employee who also has substantial non-ITIS income (for example property, pension income, bank interest) and the ITIS deductions from my salary will not fully cover the tax liability.
You will need to pay the balance of tax owing by the 31st January 2008. To calculate the amount due , add together the total of ITIS payments which have been deducted to date and the payments which will be deducted to the year end. Subtract this total from the tax you have been charged.
An example is shown below:
| Tax charged (includes non ITIS income): |
£5,000.00 |
| |
|
| Less |
|
| ITIS deductions January to October: |
£3,000.00 |
| Forecast November/December deductions: |
£600.00 |
| |
|
| Balance to pay by 31 January 2008: |
£1,400.00 |
Alternatively, contact the Income Tax Office who will assist you with the calculation.
8. My employed earnings have reduced significantly this year compared to the year for which the Notice of Assessment is for.
The tax collected from ITIS will not be sufficient to cover your liability.
You can contact the Income Tax Office, if you have not already done so, to discuss the options.
