Is Advance to Work for me?
If you are 16 - 19 years of age, out of work, and finding it hard to get a job or need more experience under your belt to work out what you really want to do, the answer is 'yes'.
As an ATW trainee, what will I gain?
- a personal mentor to support you throughout your time on the scheme
- meaningful work experience in an area that interests you
- skills and training relevant to the job market and your individual needs

- the chance to forge a valuable relationship with an employer
- motivation and focus by having a productive daily routine

When can I start?
As long as you are between 16 and 19 years old you can apply to join the scheme at any time.
Will I be paid?
You won’t be paid a wage during your time on the scheme but you may be eligible to receive a Youth Incentive Payment or Income Support dependant on your age, circumstances and attendance on the scheme. Your mentor will discuss the details of this with you.

What type of training will I receive?
Training is an integral part of Advance to Work, delivered by a range of training providers. Mentors arrange appropriate training tailored to each individual’s needs. Advance to Work is extensive and includes:
- mock interviews and CV advice
- numeracy and literacy
- 7 Habits for Highly Effective Teenagers (Level 2 Certificate in Personal Effectiveness)
- communication skills
- office skills
- Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel and Access advanced training
- ECDL
- first aid in the workplace
- workplace fire safety training
- manual handling
- risks and hazards at work (Level 1 BSC Health and Safety)
- day release in construction trades
- a range of confidence and team building activities
How do I apply?
To apply, please fill out the application below as fully as possible and in your own writing. You can post it or drop it into the Advance to Work office. If you need help filling in the application form, please contact us.

What happens next?
Once we have received your application we will contact you and arrange for you to come for an interview with one of our mentors. This is a chance for you to tell us more about your interests and the type of work you would like to do.
Your mentor will then be able to start arranging your work placement, your monthly training schedule, which includes vocational training specific to your individual career goals, and at the end of your work experience will help you to find paid employment.
