Request
What provisions have been put place to cover loss of earnings for States of Jersey zero hour employees who are deemed as high or moderate risk and are unable to work during the current ongoing Covid-19 situation? In particular supply teachers who are plus 28 weeks pregnant and who wanted to work but couldn’t due to schools being unable to guarantee provisions to mitigate health risk to mother and baby.
Response
Due to the nature of a zero hours contracts, those employed on a zero hours basis would not usually be paid for work that they are not able to undertake. However, given the unique circumstances that the Covid-19 pandemic presents, zero hour employees offered or rostered to work a specific shift or number of hours have been paid. The arrangements would include zero hour employees who are unable to work due to being high or moderate risk.
