Registering your vehicle in Jersey

When vehicles need to be registered

You must register your vehicle immediately if you're:

moving to Jersey and planning to live here for more than 12 months
a Jersey resident importing a vehicle

If you're importing a vehicle, you can only drive the foreign registered vehicle in Jersey:

directly from the point the vehicle enters Jersey to the place of storage
directly to Driver and Vehicle Standards (DVS) for the purposes of registration

You'll need the relevant insurance for the vehicle.

How to register a vehicle

The process, documents needed and fee for registering a vehicle in Jersey is different depending on whether the vehicle is new or previously registered elsewhere.

All documents needed for registration must be originals. Copies or scans are not be accepted.

Bringing a vehicle from the UK

If bringing a vehicle from the UK the complete V5C (UK registration document) must be obtained from the seller. Without the complete V5C, there is a risk that the vehicle may not be registered in Jersey. DVLA in the UK no longer issue export certificates and will not send a V5C to a non UK address.

All previously registered vehicles

All vehicles previously registered elsewhere will need an inspection before being registered in Jersey.

Before booking the inspection, DVS will need to have seen the completed booking in form (VRD17) and the foreign vehicle registration document. Bookings can only be made in person at DVS or by email to dvsinfo@gov.je attaching both documents.

The fee for the inspection will depend on the vehicle:

£41.50 for vehicles with EU or UK Whole Vehicle Type Approval
£460 for vehicles without Whole Vehicle Type Approval or £130 for motorcycles
£106 for vehicles over 25 years old without EU or UK Whole Vehicle Type Approval

If your vehicle passes the inspection, you'll need the following documents and fees to complete registration:

foreign vehicle registration document or export certificate
proof of ownership. If not named on foreign vehicle registration document
a Jersey Customs vehicle import declaration
a completed application form to register a vehicle (VRD2)
pay the registration fee of £34

VRD 2 Application to register a vehicle

If you're not named as the owner on the foreign vehicle registration document, proof of ownership will be needed in the form of either a purchase receipt, bill of sale or invoice.

All sections of the foreign vehicle registration document are needed. For example, UK V5C sections 1 and 2 of new style, or 1 to 8 of the old style.

New vehicles

New vehicles need to be checked by DVS before they can be registered. There's no fee for this check. Call us in advance to book.

To register a new vehicle you'll need:

a declaration of newness. This is a V55/1 from the manufacturer when importing from UK
evidence of EU or UK Whole Vehicle Type Approval, or a Certificate of Conformity
a Jersey Customs vehicle import declaration
a completed application form to register a vehicle (VRD2)
pay the registration fee of £34

For vehicles imported from the UK, the V55/1 normally includes evidence of the Whole Vehicle Type approval. If it does not, a Certificate of Conformity will also be needed.

Vehicles without evidence of EU or UK Whole Vehicle Type Approval, will need to be inspected before the registration. The fee for this inspection is £460 or £133.50 for motorcycles.

Request a vehicle registration number

The vehicle will be assigned a registration number at the time of registration. You can pay a fee and request a specific registration number.

Exemptions to inspection and licence fees

In support of Government objectives to reduce transport CO2 emissions, the following vehicles are exempt from certain inspection and licence fees:

Citroen Ami
Renault Twizy
Jiayuan City Spirit

Vehicle Emissions Duty (VED)

You might have to pay Vehicle Emissions Duty (VED) before your vehicle is registered in Jersey.

The duty charged will be based the manufacturer's CO2 emissions data. If the emissions data is not available the charge is based on the cubic capacity (cc).
