Jersey 'Health and Life Opportunities' survey report

Produced by the Office of the Chief Executive
Authored by Public Perspectives and published on 19 Jan 2016
Cost: £45,200.00

Summary

The Jersey 'Health and Life Opportunities' survey is part of a wider programme of consultation and work by the Social Policy Unit which will help develop a disability strategy for Jersey and will also provide invaluable information on carers in Jersey.

The survey was sent to over 10,000 Jersey households and was designed to provide a picture of the health conditions that Islanders live with and what impact they have on people’s daily lives.

The work was carried out by Public Perspectives Ltd, with Professor Nick Watson, Centre for Disability Research, Glasgow University. Public Perspectives is a social research agency, with extensive experience in conducting research into social issues including disability.

The survey was developed in partnership with the States of Jersey and a local key stakeholder group, which included representatives from the voluntary sector as well as service users.

This report covers the findings and analysis from the survey, including:

  • overall disability prevalence
  • the prevalence of disability amongst different demographic groups including gender, age, tenure, country of origin, residency status, income and geography
  • the emotional wellbeing and social isolation of disabled residents (and how this compares with non-disabled residents)
  • the experience of travelling around Jersey, employment and education, accessing buildings, services and support, participating in wider society and perceptions of discrimination for those with a disability
  • the prevalence, profile and experience of carers

Using the findings from this report, work will be carried out by the States of Jersey in 2016 to develop a disability strategy in consultation with Islanders.
