More bus shelters this summer

05 July 2011

The new shelters are the latest part of the Transport and Technical Services Department's programme of improvement for bus travel.

The latest shelters are:

Service 15 (Airport – St Helier):

  • Mermaid Tavern
  • opposite Belle Vue, Route des Quennevais
  • Tabor Park, Route des Genets
  • Mont Nicolle/Mont Gras d’Eau, Route des Genets
  • First Tower, Route de St Aubin

Service 1 (Gorey Pier – St Helier):

  • Gorey Slip, Rue a Don
  • Le Bourg, Grande Route de la Cote
  • La Mare Slip, Grande Route de la Cote

Service 3A and Green Explorer:

  • Royal Hotel, Grande Route de Faldouet

A number of school bus routes also serve the above bus stops, so pupils will be able to benefit from the new shelters.

They are being built in the same style as those installed during recent years, with the shelters on service 15 being finished in dark green and those on service1 in light grey. The shelter next to the Royal Hotel in St Martin will be a timber structure similar to the one recently constructed at Ville Emphrie, St Lawrence.

The Parish of St Martin is funding the two shelters in St Martin, and the Parish of St Clement is funding the shelter at Le Bourg.  The rest are being funded by Transport and Technical Services from the Sustainable Transport budget.

Connétable Mike Jackson, the Minister for Transport and Technical Services, said “I have put in place a programme of improvements to the bus service to increase usage in line with the Sustainable Transport Policy. We are continually making scheduling improvements, Connex has introduced new buses to the fleet and with these 9 new shelters added to the 6 installed a few months ago, we are making travelling by bus a more comfortable and easier option.”

He continued, “I want to see passenger numbers continue to increase and we will be making more improvements to the service, including more bus shelters.”
