Protect and Respect condom campaign

18 July 2011

A campaign has been launched in Jersey to encourage young men aged 16 to 21 to use condoms.

The Jersey Condom Distribution Scheme's ‘Protect and Respect’ campaign has been developed in response to research which shows although condoms remain the most popular method of contraception amongst young people, just 19% of the uptake of free condoms locally is by men.

Condoms are the only barrier method of contraception that can protect against both sexually transmitted infections and unplanned pregnancy. It is hoped that the Protect and Respect campaign will not only encourage young men to use condoms consistently and correctly, should they choose to have sex, but also raise awareness that they can get free condoms from a range of services in Jersey.

Protect and Respect has been developed by the CDS Planning Group in partnership with groups of local young people. 26 young people took part in a series of focus groups and consultations to develop the campaign content and tone.

Following the feedback from young men involved in the development process, the campaign consists of 2 poster designs, a website which provides sexual health information aimed specifically at young men, and a Facebook page. This is in response to local and national research which shows that young men in this age group prefer to access support and services online rather than visit in person.

The campaign is featured on www.gov.je and posters will also be displayed at community venues such as secondary schools, sports centres, football clubs, youth centres and sexual health clinics.
