Furze fire prompts warning from Fire and Rescue

18 September 2012

At 4.30pm the Combined Control Centre received several emergency calls reporting a furze fire in the area of La Rue Baal, La Moye.

Initially one fire engine from Blue Watch was dispatched from headquarters, however, on arrival, assistance was requested for a further fire engine and water carrier. The initial crews brought the fire under control very quickly and they were soon backed up by other crews from headquarters.

The size of the fire measured approximately 50 metres by 10 metres. Crews stayed on the scene until 6.30pm to continue damping down the area involved.

Watch Commander Chris Love said "Despite us thinking we haven't had the kind of summer that we are usually accustomed to in Jersey, there are many areas of open land that are still rather dry".
