International Nurses Day conference

10 May 2012

International Nurses Day is celebrated around the world on May 12, the birth date of Florence Nightingale. To celebrate this important day a conference aimed at raising awareness about good nursing practice in Jersey will take place on Thursday 10 May.

The conference is called 'Closing the Gap – From Evidence to Action' and will take place in the Halliwell Theatre at Jersey General Hospital.

Lecturer at the Education Centre in the General Hospital, Jenny Child said “The philosophy of the day is very much a programme for nurses, prepared by nurses, celebrating their practice initiatives. Nurses have been actively involved in bringing the programme together, encouraging all aspects of nursing from around the Island. The conference aim is to provide a professional networking forum, which reaches all specialities of nursing, fostering an inclusive and inspirational setting in which to develop and progress quality nursing care.”

The topics covered in the conference include tackling alcohol related admissions, the importance of nutrition and protected meal times, infection control and expanding the workforce.

Chief Nurse Rose Naylor said “Jersey has much to be proud of in its nursing workforce, the range of knowledge, skills and experience is evident in the quality of the care they provide to the people of this Island. We believe it is important to mark this day and to recognise the significant role nurses play in people’s lives. Nurses are proud of the work they do and as such to be able to showcase some of this fabulous work undertaken in Jersey is a great opportunity.”

Staff poster presentations will also take place during the conference, which is a chance for nurses to share each other’s practice in their area of work.

The conference will look at the areas of mental health, adult services, special needs and paediatrics.
