New recycling banks on beaches

22 July 2013

Transport and Technical Services (TTS) is pleased to announce the arrival of recycling facilities at eight of the Island’s beaches from Thursday 25 July 2013.

The new recycling banks are designed to help Islanders and tourists recycle their cans, plastic bottles and glass after enjoying time on the beach this summer.

The eight beach locations chosen for the first phase in what is hoped will be an Island-wide project are: Green Island; the Gunsite; Ouaisne car park; Wayside, St Brelade’s Bay; St Brelade’s Bay promenade; La Braye slip; Le Port car park; Greve de Lecq promenade.

The signs for the recycling banks have been designed by local artist Edward Blampied to help the facilities complement their seaside location and bring a smile to passers by.

Encouragement

Emma Richardson, TTS Recycling Manager, said “Beach-goers now have the opportunity to recycle their cans, plastic bottles and glass before they go home. To increase recycling, it needs to be easy and become a part of everyday behaviour. We hope our new beach recycling facilities will encourage people to recycle more, not just at the beach but also at home, at work and at school.”

Wayne Taylor, TTS Cleaning Services Manager, said “Rubbish is no longer just rubbish, it’s a resource, and we hope that by providing recycling facilities at many of the Island’s beaches, we can help reinforce this message and make it easier for us all to keep our Island beautiful.”

Islanders are reminded that the new beach recycling banks should not be used for general household recycling. These new facilities are much smaller than the Island-wide recycling ‘bring banks’ and have been designed only to receive the recyclables generated by beach-goers.
