Campaign to keep Jersey clean and green

04 June 2013

A new campaign is being launched to encourage people to make Jersey greener and cleaner.

The Beautiful Jersey campaign encourages people to take pride in Jersey and to play a part in keeping the Island cleaner, safer and more beautiful by, for example, adopting a lane or beach; making sure their own area is litter free, or simply by setting a good example to others.

Similar schemes in the UK have resulted in reduced littering after communities worked together to tackle the problem.

There are a number of different aspects to the Beautiful Jersey campaign, but it kicks off with the theme of town litter. Posters feature a group of young people from the Move On Youth Project saying ‘we love Jersey, let’s keep it clean’.

The Minister for the Department of the Environment, Deputy Rob Duhamel said, “As the weather improves and people are starting to get out and about, we are encouraging them to dispose of their litter properly.  We want to remind people of the importance of putting litter in bins, clearing up after their dogs, and disposing of waste, including garden waste, properly.”

Eco Active programme manager for the Department for the Environment, Jane Burns said: “We’ve launched the campaign to encourage Islanders to take pride in how Jersey looks and to remind people of their personal responsibility with regard to littering and waste.

“We have gorgeous parks, gardens, beaches and a network of beautiful green lanes.  Beautiful Jersey is about individuals, communities and organisations working side-by-side to make their little bits of Jersey cleaner, safer and altogether even more attractive.”
