The Chief Minister is visiting St Luke’s Primary School on Tuesday (19 November), as part of his ongoing commitment to visit a wide range of Government services around the Island. He will be accompanying the Assistant Minister for Education, Deputy Jeremy Maçon.

St. Luke’s School has an excellent track record for the provision of French language education, and in 2018 pupils in Year 5 (9 and 10-year olds) participated in the French Experience, a pilot scheme, during which they took part in daily French lessons.

Senator John Le Fondré will also be visiting the newly-established Early Years Unit, which will be officially opened on Tuesday by Deputy Maçon.

Senator Le Fondré and Deputy Maçon will be escorted around the school by a group of Year 6 pupils, alongside the Headteacher and Deputy Headteacher. They will observe a cooking class and a French class, where they will take part in a question and answer session, in French, with a larger group of Year 6 pupils.

Senator Le Fondré said: “I am delighted to see the French language taking centre stage at one of our primary schools. French teaching was introduced into every class at St Luke’s just three years ago, and now 83% of children achieve Year 6 Secure. This is an indication of what could be achieved across the island.”

Deputy Maçon said: “St Luke’s School has been extensively modernised in recent years, and this impressive Early Years Unit is its latest development. The unit caters for nursery and reception children and is already playing its part in helping families provide the best possible start in life for their children.”
