Islanders reminded to dispose of waste correctly

04 May 2021

Islanders are being reminded to check what they are throwing away after two potentially dangerous incidents caused explosions at the Energy Recovery Facility (ERF).

In the past two months, both a fire extinguisher and a SodaStream gas cylinder exploded when they were processed at the Bulky Waste Facility. In the first incident, the extinguisher became lodged in the roof, causing the facility to close for a day.

Both commercial and public customers of the facility must follow the guidance that is provided to them when they register with the ERF. Islanders can also check with trained staff if they are unsure on how to dispose of their waste correctly.

ERF Manager, Ian Williams, said: "The Energy Recovery Facility only processes burnable items - this does not include metal, glass, plasterboard, builder's rubble or marine distress flares.

"We had two canisters that were full of gas explode when we were processing them. One cylinder flew through the building and landed near to where someone was working. Both these incidents could have caused serious injury to either a member of staff or a visiting customer.

"We have health and safety measures in place, but it is really important that everyone realises that carelessly throwing something away could risk people's safety. If everyone considers what they are throwing out, whether it is into a skip, a house clearance or even the household bin, the chances of a serious accident could be avoided.

"All Islanders have access to the Household Recycling and Reuse Centre at La Collette where trained staff can help with the correct disposal of various items."
