Severe weather snow update – 9 February 2021

09 February 2021

The Severe Weather Tactical Co-ordination Group (SW TCG) met this morning to assess the situation regarding snow this evening and overnight.

The Jersey Met Office have just issued an Orange Snow Warning, a band of snow will affect the island from 17:00, lasting until the early hours of Wednesday morning. Accumulations of up to 2cm are likely but may reach around 5cm with strong winds possibly leading to some drifting at times. The temperature is expected to remain at or below freezing throughout this period, with significant wind chill making it feel much colder.

A decision will be made by 06:00 tomorrow morning [Wednesday, 10 February] whether individual schools will be open or closed tomorrow or if there is a delayed opening for some or all schools. Parents are advised to check with their own school or college for the latest information, as well as following the Government of Jersey social media channels, where the decision will be posted.

If the weather is expected to deteriorate, further alerts will be issued this afternoon or evening, as required.

Teams are on alert across the Island to respond to any severe weather and the salting team will be out this evening and in the early hours of the morning to ensure that main road hills and major routes are kept clear.

The SW TCG has issued the following advice, in the event of snow and freezing temperatures, to ensure Islanders are prepared:

If attending the COVID Vaccination Centre, members of the public are advised to be careful when travelling to Fort Regent and to enter via car or on foot through Pier Road car park (rather than Fort Regent Road), or use the Shuttle Bus service from Liberation Station. Where possible, Islanders should park in Pier Road on floors 10-12 rather than the open top car parks where conditions could be slippery. The footpaths, roads and carpark at Fort Regent have all been salted to ensure public safety.

Any Islanders needing access to help and support, can use the Connect Me service https://www.gov.je/connectme.
