Launch of 2023 Early in Careers programme

24 February 2023

The third year of the Jersey Public Service Early in Careers programme is being launched.

The aim is to attract young and on-island talent to consider careers in the public sector through paid internships.

The programme follows on from the success of the pilot scheme in 2021 and then our 2022 programme, where 84 people applied with 41 securing a six-week placement across a range of Public Service departments; a 20% increase on the previous year. The target this year is to place 50 interns across a range of departments.

The Minister for Children and Education, Deputy Inna Gardiner said “There is a wealth of talent and skills in Jersey, and the Early in Careers programme is a way we can identify, grow, and harness that talent.

“These paid internships give Islanders an insight into the range of jobs within the public sector. I’d encourage any university students – whether studying on or off-Island – to consider applying for an internship to gain valuable work experience alongside their studies.”

Connetable Andy Jehan, Vice Chair of the States Employment Board said.” “I’m excited to announce that applications are open for this year’s Jersey Public Service Internship Programme. The Programme will run for six weeks in the summer from 24th July to 1st September. Our internships offer a paid period of work experience related to your chosen field of study or career interest. It’s an opportunity for you to gain an insight into a particular area of public service, learn more about yourself and could be the start of a rewarding career with us. If you’re interested in applying for this year’s intake, we’d love to hear from you.

"This all forms part of our wider talent strategy and focuses on attracting and inspiring young people and local on-island talent to consider future careers in Jersey Public Service.”

Thomas Pope, an intern in 2022, said of his time “I joined the Government of Jersey internship program to experience what work is like in the public sector whilst developing transferable skills that I can use in my future career. My illustration degree studies led me to receive loads of opportunities within the Chief Operating Office that meant every day was creatively driven and dynamic.

"What I enjoyed most about my internship was all of the people I was able to meet - from my welcoming team in Organisation Development to those inviting us to see their departments during the insight days. I also enjoyed the level of responsibility I was given even as an intern; I worked on real projects with real impacts across the government.”

The programme runs from the 24 July to the 1 September.
