Statement of significance
An important example of a late Victorian college of classical proportions and detailing. Significant as the first ladies college in Jersey, and one of only a handful of schools in the British Isles to prepare girls for university examinations at the end of the 19th century. A rare example of a purpose-built C19 girls school grounds, notable for its simplicity of design. The 1930s open-air Greek theatre stage at the east end of the lawn is rare, perhaps unique and has been sensitively added to the site.
Context
One of the few grand buildings of this scale in St Helier retaining it's formal grounds to the front of the building.
External Description
The building has a classically proportioned facade (37-bay, 3-storey) enhanced by a string course at first floor level and decorative pilasters. It is of unpainted render with a central tower topped by a leaded dome. Each of the 4 wings has a central triangular pediment detail. To the western entrance is a portico formed of a dentilled entablature supported on four Corinthian columns and pilasters. The windows are contemporary timber two-pane vertical sliding sashes. There is a pitched slate roof. Early purpose-built girls school grounds, comprising a terrace below the building, and a lawn leading down to the road. The large linear school building is set back to the rear of the site which is enclosed to the west, south and east by a high granite rubble wall. The stretch to the south is a retaining wall above Rouge Bouillon. A number of mature trees line the boundary walls including 2 London Plane, 2 sycamore, several black poplar, beech and a line of 13 pleached lines along the south side. The main entrance is at the south-west corner, off La Pouquelaye, flanked by two large rendered piers with 4-pedimented caps, and a boarded-up gateway. The gate survives and retains one of originally three ornate cast iron panels. A further entrance gives access off Drury Lane, with similar piers and a cast iron-panelled gate retaining two of the three ornate square panels. A third gateway gives access as a service entrance at the north-west corner of the site from La Pouquelaye, again with similar piers but no gates. The curving drives from the southern entrances lead up to, and along, the straight terrace on which the long school building stands. A short spur to the terrace leads from the north-west entrance. The terrace is bounded on the south side by a 1930s concrete Italianate balustrade with intermediate plinths. A central flight of steps leads down to the lawn from the central doorway. The steps are flanked by concrete planters with Classical motifs. The terrace overlooks the large level lawn bounded to the east by a 1930s raised semi-circular Greek theatre stage including a row of Greek columns running across the middle from north to south.
Internal Description
The original plan form of the main building and halls remains intact, as do the former dining room and main hall. There are many original internal features of note including three mahogany staircases, a large number of doors and joinery items, and an oak panelled library on the first floor.
