Data Protection Day

26 January 2018

Sunday (28 January 2018) will be Data Protection Day – a day that is recognised globally to raise awareness of data protection and to promote good data privacy practices. This year the event will be especially significant, as a new European Data Protection regime (GDPR) will have a dramatic impact on citizens and businesses around the world when it comes into effect in May 2018.

The States Assembly recognised the importance of data protection and privacy rights when Members unanimously approved new legislation for Jersey on 16 January 2018. The new laws will transform the Island’s approach to data protection by strengthening individuals’ rights, while also ensuring businesses remain competitive. The draft laws are due to go to the Privy Council in February and to come into effect in May, in line with the EU GDPR timetable.

The Assistant Chief Minister, Senator Paul Routier, said “Keeping our data secure is vital for all of us, in government, in business, and at home. It is fitting that, as we mark Data Protection Day 2018, we also recognise the role that our new cyber security strategy and data protection legislation will play in raising the profile of this important topic and retaining Jersey’s best-in-class regulatory status. Data Protection Day is an invaluable reminder of the importance of raising awareness and being prepared.”

The States of Jersey is a significant holder of personal data, and data protection compliance is a high priority. The public sector is committed to the ethical and innovative use of new technologies to improve customer service while also protecting individuals’ privacy. A number of data protection projects are underway, a dedicated Corporate Data Protection Officer has been recruited, and specialised training is being provided for staff.
