Reduced speed limits near schools

28 October 2008

Transport and Technical Services is making improvements to child safety near schools. Special part-time 20 miles per hour speed limits near seven of the Island’s schools will come into force when the schools go back after half term on Monday 3 November. The reduced speed limits will be in force when the orange lights are flashing on the speed signs, when children are going to and coming out of school. At other times the usual speed limit for the area applies.

Special signs, which show the name of the school, the 20 mile an hour limit and orange lights which flash when in operation, are being erected over the half term week at the following Schools: La Moye, Mont Nicolle, Victoria College Prep, First Tower, Springfield, St John and St Saviour. Where appropriate, solar panels will be fitted to power the lights at some locations. Signs will also be erected to denote the end of the restrictions.

“I am delighted we are able to progress this improvement to children’s safety outside schools,” said Deputy Guy de Faye, Minister for Transport and Technical Services. “I hope it will reassure parents that the States takes these matters very seriously and I hope that the speed restrictions may encourage more parents to allow their children to walk or cycle to school, giving them additional confidence and independence.”

Similar speed restrictions will be introduced near Trinity, St Lawrence and Grouville Schools over the Christmas holidays.
