School leavers offered help by new scheme

26 August 2009

A new scheme has been set up to help young people who have left school or college and are unsure of their options. The Advance to Work scheme has been set up by the Skills Board on behalf of the Education, Sport and Culture Department as part of the States' fiscal stimulus package, and aims to assist young people adversely affected by the economic downturn.

Features of the scheme

The scheme will provide young people with work placements and relevant training, including on-the-job training and vocational and key skills training.

Interviews are being held in September and the aim will be to start the placements as soon as possible once the student has been matched to a suitable employer.

Support from employers

The Minister for Education Sport and Culture, Deputy James Reed, commented "It is important that we support our young people during these challenging times. This new initiative will enable students to experience work whilst still receiving valuable training, skills development and financial support. Whilst there is no guarantee of a permanent job at the end of the placement, the experience should give the student confidence and an understanding of the work environment that will prove invaluable in the future."

He went on, "I urge employers to rally round these young people and give them an opportunity to start on the career ladder. Any company who thinks they may be able to help should contact the Advance to Work office on 449256."
