Biodiversity Partnership to hold fifth annual meeting

23 August 2010

The Jersey Biodiversity Partnership (JBP) is organising its fifth annual meeting for all partners, volunteers and interested parties to discuss what work it has been undertaking this year and what is planned for 2010 and beyond.

The JBP is an informal partnership of committed organisations, environmental groups and individuals who are involved in:

  • Island surveys
  • research projects
  • practical conservation management activities
  • environmental campaigns

The partnership actively encourages more groups or volunteers to join.

Assistant Minister for Planning and Environment, Deputy Robert Duhamel, said "At a very practical level, the partnership aims to work collectively to protect, conserve and enhance the variety of wildlife species and habitats in Jersey through the successful implementation of Jersey's Biodiversity Action Plans. These target those species and habitats that are considered to be threatened or in need of special attention and provide a range of strategies and targets for their conservation.

"The Environment Division is already working closely with a number of environmental organisations to help local species and habitats thrive with the activities resulting from the Biodiversity Action Plans. The JBP hope others will respond positively to this opportunity to come along to the meeting and join the partnership."

Meeting dates and topics

Meetings are being held on:

  • Thursday 26 August, 7pm to 9.30pm at the Société Jersiaise, 7 Pier Road, St Helier,
  • Saturday 28 August, 10am to 1pm at the Société Jersiaise, 7 Pier Road, St Helier

New drafted biodiversity action plans

JBP will introduce and encourage comment on 5 new plans:

  • Jersey buttercup
  • slow worm
  • European shag
  • hedgerows and boundary features
  • rural habitat statement
All of these plans are due to be published later in 2010.

Eco-active Biodiversity ‘Championship scheme’

The United Nations have declared 2010 International Year of Biodiversity (IYB) – the year that celebrates the diversity of life on earth. To participate in this landmark year, the Environment Department has launched a new programme, Eco-active Biodiversity Championship Scheme. The scheme aims to implement Jersey’s biodiversity action plans through a ‘Championship Scheme’ which involves inviting businesses, community groups and schools to act as ambassadors for individual habitats or species.

Biological Records Centre

There is a lot of information available on the diversity of species and habitats in Jersey, but it needs organisation to improve its accessibility by centralising all biological records to assist both data providers and users.
