Jersey Deaf Partnership discusses communication support

13 August 2010

An open meeting is being held by the Jersey Deaf Partnership Board to find out about the communication needs of people who are deaf or hard of hearing.

The meeting is aimed at anyone who believes more could be done to improve access to everyday life, activities and events for people who are deaf and hard of hearing, or who would like to know more about how a professional communication support service could help.

There will also be a chance to share your views on the communication support available in the island, for example:

  • loop systems
  • lip reading
  • sign language interpreting
  • note taking
  • live speech to text translation
  • subtitles
  • screen phones
  • the level of deaf awareness among hearing people

The meeting is taking place on Monday 23 August, from 6 - 8pm, in the special functions room at the General Hospital (Parade entrance).

As well as this meeting, consultants from the UK are coming to research local requirements for deaf and hard of hearing communication support and to advise on how to train people to deliver this service.
