Good fire plans allowed controlled evacuation of town flat

09 September 2010

Jersey Fire and Rescue attended a severe fire in a St Helier flat on Tuesday 7 September 2010, after members of the public reported smoke and flames issuing from third floor windows in Halkett Place.

The Emergency Combined Control Centre dispatched 3 fire appliances and a paramedic unit to the scene immediately. One of the appliances was the Fire and Rescue Service's special aerial ladder platform which was sent in case the roof area was affected.

The fire was extinguished quickly; however, due to the intensity and the town centre location, part-time firefighters were also summoned to duty and sent to the scene to reinforce the on-duty crew. In all, 18 firefighters and 4 fire appliances attended.

Station Manager Richard Liron commented "The people who work in those premises should be congratulated on the strength of their fire plans. The building's fire alarm system had activated and provided early warning and this allowed the premises to be evacuated in a very controlled manner."
