Improved facility for elderly Islanders

29 July 2014

Clinique Pinel in St Saviour has been officially reopened today after a 12 month £3 million refurbishment project.

The Clinique Pinel project forms an important part of work to improve inpatient services in Jersey for older adults with mental health problems. It forms a key part of the Health and Social Services Department’s 2012 White Paper ‘Caring for Each Other, Caring for Ourselves.’ The project was carried out by Jersey Property Holdings alongside local external contractors.

The refurbished building provides two in-patient wards, Beech and Cedar, offering a total of 28 acute assessment and treatment beds to help older people with mental health problems.

Beech and Cedar wards

Beech Ward is suited to those living with mental health illnesses, eg dementia, and experiencing difficulties living in the community.

Cedar Ward specialises in assessment and treatment for other mental health issues which come on, eg depression, anxiety or psychosis.

The new services will be provided in partnership with third-sector organisations, including Jersey Alzheimers Association and MIND Jersey.

The environment has been transformed from multi-occupied dormitories to single rooms, many with their own en-suite facilities, all offering much improved surroundings.

Example of cross-departmental working

Deputy Anne Pryke, Minister for Health and Social Services, said: “This refurbishment is an excellent example of cross-departmental working involving Health and Social Services and the Treasury, including Jersey Property Holdings, to deliver an outstanding improvement in the environment for residents.”
