Anyone with a Social Security number can now apply online for a registration card. The service has been introduced to make it easier for customers to apply at a time and place that suits them. It follows customer feedback which found that 76% of islanders would like the government to provide more of its services online.

Around 1,300 registration cards are issued each month, the majority of which are replacement cards. They confirm a holder’s Social Security number and residential status and are required when starting a new job or moving home.

To apply for a replacement card, customers need to activate a OneGov account. To do this, they will need to create a digital ID using the Government’s secure third-party provider, Yoti. Full instructions can be found online

Deputy Scott Wickenden, who has responsibility for digital services, said: “The Government’s vision is to be digital by default, while also providing inclusive access for all. It’s great to see the first Government service is now available using Yoti. We have set up one.gov.je as a central platform for new personal digital services and we’re working to put more Government services online, such as checking Social Security contributions, accessing health records and submitting personal tax returns.”

Director General for Customer and Local Services, Ian Burns, said: “We’re committed to making it easy for customers to access government services, whilst ensuring that customer privacy remains a top priority. We have worked extensively with Yoti to ensure the ID system protects customers’ data. Using digital ID will save customers time and allow the Government to deliver services more efficiently.”

Anyone who doesn’t yet have a Social Security number will still need to register in person with Customer and Local Services to apply for a new registration card.
