Infrastructure and Environment Bursary Scheme

IE Bursary Award

Infrastructure and Environment (IE) has established a Bursary Award to provide funding to university students studying engineering or natural environment disciplines.

If your application is successful you’ll receive £2,000 for each of your university years for the duration of your degree course to use towards:

  • tuition fees
  • maintenance
  • travel

Your payments will be spread evenly over the academic year and made directly into your bank account at the beginning of each term. After completing each academic year, you’ll need to confirm your intention to continue the course and provide satisfactory annual reports or examination passes before you can receive further payments.

You’ll also be offered up to 4 weeks paid work experience within IE per year while you’re in full time education. This will allow you to experience many of the diverse areas available.

You’ll be given the contact details of a manager in IE who you’ll need to keep in touch with to:

  • confirm your progress and exam results at the end of each term
  • provide details of term or semester times for bursary payments to be arranged
  • confirm at least 2 months in advance when you’ll be available for paid work experience

Who can apply

You can apply for the award if you’re a Jersey resident signed up on a first-degree course at a university, college or other similar institutions. First-degree courses including Bachelor of Sciences (BSc), Bachelor of Engineering (BEng), or Bachelor of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (BA).

The subject you’ll study must be relevant to the bursary, including:

  • engineering such as civil, mechanical, electrical, transport
  • environmental and biological sciences
  • chemistry

You must have been accepted, either firmly or provisionally, by a university or equivalent institution to undertake a full-time first-degree course and must have attained any minimum entry requirements set as a condition of acceptance.

To be considered Jersey resident you must have lived on the Island for the last 5 years and must not have been absent for more than 12 months in those 5 years, excluding periods spent in full time education.

You cannot apply if you’re a student:

  • who has already started an undergraduate degree course
  • seeking funding for post graduate study
  • who secured a bursary elsewhere

Deadline for applications

Closing date for applications is 30 June 2023.

Apply for the bursary

To apply for the bursary you’ll need:

  • to answer questions to confirm your eligibility to apply for the bursary
  • details of the college, university, or institution where you’ll study
  • details of your degree course subject and duration
  • proof of acceptance in your degree course from the relevant college, university, or other institution
  • personal information, including contact details and any special needs or support requirements
  • your academic history summary
  • explanation for the interest in applying for the bursary
  • what work or voluntary experience you have done, if any
  • any further experience that may be relevant to your application

Terms and conditions for the bursary

Only 1 application per person will be considered.

The Panel’s decision is final, and they will not enter into discussion as to why an application was or was not successful.

Personal data from successful applicants will be held in databases for the purposes of administering the awards process.  Personal data from unsuccessful applicants will be held for 6 months then destroyed.

Students who have either received funding from elsewhere or receive it whilst in receipt of the IE bursary should advise IE immediately.

Students who gain a bursary from elsewhere will not be considered for the IE scheme.

IE requires reference to its support to be made in the publication of any results for which a student is in receipt of the award.

Awards must be taken up in the year in which they are allocated.

In the event of unsatisfactory academic performance or conduct by the student, the award may be suspended or terminated. IE will decide what action should be taken in each case.

The payment of the bursary may be terminated or be suspended by IE if the student:

  • •does not start their degree course
  • does not complete the course.
  • transfers off the agreed course on to any other course
  • is absent from the course for prolonged or repeated period
  • is expelled or removed from the course by the university or college
  • does not meet the minimum requirements laid down by the university or college for progressing to the following year of study

If an award is suspended or terminated for any reason, payments will cease from the date of such discontinuation. If the bursary is cancelled as a result of the student leaving the course, the money for the term in question shall be repaid.

Holidays must not be taken in term time. Students must provide an explanation or justification to IE if they are absent from their course during term time.

IE will not normally extend the bursary for study beyond three years. Consideration will, however, be given where there are extenuating circumstances.

Students do not need to obtain prior authorisation from IE before undertaking work experience within another organisation; however, notification of the dates would be appreciated.

IE reserves the right to amend at its discretion the conditions attached to this award, including the amount of the award, at any time and to terminate the payment of the award. The granting of the award does not confer any contractual right on the recipient to receive the sums awarded.

Awards are made to students based on the degree course they wish to undertake and the university or college that has offered them a place. Prior approval must be sought before any transfer between educational establishments is applied for or takes place. IE will consider requests to transfer an award between educational establishments at its discretion, provided that:

  • notice is given well in advance 
  • justification is provided  
  • both institutions agree to the transfer  
  • the subject choice continues to meet the criteria

IE will not meet any additional costs associated with the transfer between educational establishments.
