Ecology Trust Fund

​The Fund is a financial resource available for whole or partial support of local environmental projects.

It was established in March 1991 by the States of Jersey with a sum of money received as an insurance settlement from the Amoco Cadiz oil tanker disaster of 1978.

The fund is invested by the States Treasury to generate an income that can be used in whole or partial support of local environmental projects.

The annual income from the invested sum varies dependent on interest rates.

Donations to the Ecology Trust Fund are welcomed and may be made through the States Treasury.  

How to apply to the fund

You need to submit the following information:

  • clear details of the specific aims of the project
  • the targeted beneficiaries
  • time scale of the project: planned completion date
  • detailed breakdown of costs, to include sources of other funding, estimates for third party work and so on
  • for site-based applications: details of the site including ownership, maps and accurate drawings together with plans for public and disabled access routes
  • for projects such as the creation of nature areas, outline plans for the aftercare arrangements

The Fund's trustees meet quarterly to consider applications. The deadlines for applications in 2024 are:

  • ​31 January 2024
  • 26 April 2024
  • 26 July 2024
  • 01 November 2024

Projects eligible for funding

Examples of projects that are eligible for funding in Jersey are:

  • practical conservation tasks, including scrub clearance, pond renovation and woodland management
  • monitoring and survey programs, including studies and surveys of flora, fauna and vegetation including equipment purchases
  • surveys of marine environment, perhaps to be carried out as part of, or in conjunction with, undergraduate or postgraduate studies
  • participation in British and European projects, such as biological studies
  • other conservation tasks, not included above, which the trustees of the fund believe to be of importance to the Island
