Help with money if you need care (easy read)

The Government of Jersey helps adults and children who have care needs.

Having care needs means you need help with everyday things like:

  • washing and dressing
  • cooking and eating
  • going out and buying food
  • looking after your money

Your illness or disability might mean that you have to spend more money.

You might not be able to use a bus. You might need to go in a taxi instead.

This costs more money.

The Government gives people the money they need to be independent and have a good life.

Independent means being able to do things for yourself. Or with a little bit of support.

Support available to you from the Government includes:

  • Long-Term Care Scheme
  • Long-Term Incapacity Allowance
  • Income Support
  • Support for Children and Child Personal Care Payments
  • The Carers Advisor

Long-Term Care Scheme (LTC)

The Long-Term Care Scheme is money to pay for care.

It is called LTC for short.

LTC is for adults who will need care for the rest of their lives.

The care can be in a care home, or in the person's own home.

Before you can get LTC, a social worker from Health and Care Jersey must do a care assessment and a financial assessment.

A care assessment checks what help you need.

A financial assessment checks how much money you have and where you get it from.

To decide how much money you need, they will look at:

  • how much care you need
  • how much your family can help you
  • what support your carers might need

You might get money to pay for all of your care.

Or you might get some money to help pay for your care.

Then you have to pay the rest yourself.

Long-Term Incapacity Allowance

Long-Term Incapacity Allowance is a benefit some people can get.

Benefits are money from the Government.

It is for people with a disability or a health condition that lasts for a long time.

A health condition is a problem that affects your body.

Things like having a bad back, pain, or problems with your heart or breathing.

Or it could be to do with your mental health.

Mental health is things like your thoughts, feelings and how you cope in everyday life.

You cannot get this allowance if you were born with your disability or health condition.

To get this benefit you must work or have had a job before.

When you work you pay some money to the Government out of your wages.

If you have paid this money you might be able to get this benefit.

You must be 18 or older and younger than pension age.

Pension age is how old you have to be to get your pension.

It is between 60 and 67 years old.

A pension is money you can get you when you are older and stop working.

You must have a medical assessment.

This is a check to find out about your health condition or disability.
