Help at Home was a Government-funded initiative to expand Home Care services in Jersey. The initiative focused on recruiting new staff and upskilling existing employees in the sector.

The aim of Help at Home is to:

  • encourage home care organisations to recruit and train new employees
  • promote and advertise careers within home care
  • provide funding for home care training courses
  • provide funding to pay the salaries of new employees while they carry out training and inductions

The Help at Home upskilling and recruitment initiative will run until 31 March 2022. It is being run by Health and Community Services (HCS) with support from Customer and Local Services (CLS), Skills Jersey, HCS Education, and local home care organisations.

Why Help at Home is important

Jersey has a growing and aging population. This means that growth of the home care sector is vital for the future health and wellbeing of vulnerable Islanders. Home care provides sustainable and cost effective care for those who need it. This could be a result of a disability, injury, or age related disease.

It allows individuals to live independently for as long as possible within the comfort of their own home or within support settings. This is an alternative care option to being unnecessarily admitted to hospital or a care home.

Often, Islanders could and should be cared for in the familiar environment of their own homes, if that is their wish. But the sector is currently under developed causing some Islanders to move into care homes too early. 

Benefits of working in home care

This funding offers you the opportunity to choose a flexible, rewarding, and permanent full or part-time job in the home care sector. 

The sector is developing and has guaranteed long-term growth. This is due to increased and sustained demand for home care services as the aging population continues to grow.

Applicants don't need to have prior work experience in home care as you will receive full training and inductions. You should be personable, friendly, and compassionate with a desire to help people. You will also need to be willing to carry out basic care training and a DBS check (Criminal Records Check) to carry out care services.

What is home care?

Home care services allow a person with special physical or mental needs to live as independently and safely as possible within their home. This enables them to achieve their personal goals and have control and choice in their lives. It might be for people who are getting older. It could also be for people who are chronically ill, recovering from surgery, or have a disability.

The kind of services offered are dependent on the client's care needs. It could be as simple as a friendly face dropping by for a chat, or something as intimate and poignant as end-of-life care.

Home care services include:

  • personal care, such as help or supervision with bathing, washing hair, getting dressed, or medication reminders
  • companionship and household chores, such as assisting or supervision with cleaning, gardening, and laundry
  • support or help with meal preparation or delivering meals
  • support or help with money management, such as help filling in forms and making sure that bills get paid on time
  • healthcare, such as respite care, wound care, minor injury care, or palliative care
  • assisting with Telecare, the use of technologies such as remote monitoring and emergency alarms to enable the unwell, disabled, or elderly to receive care at home so that clients can live independently

There are many reasons to consider a job or career in the home care sector. It can provide extra meaning to your life and career. It's a flexible job that can work around your busy life schedule. And it's a job with safe prospects during uncertain times. 

Privilege of making a difference is rewarding

Something that makes this sector stand out from others is the ability to make a real difference to people's lives. Home care is about giving people the opportunity to live happier, healthier, and more independent lives within the comfort and privacy of their own homes. It is also about giving people more choice about where and how they are cared for whether it is home care, at hospital, or in a care home.

Aside from being good for physical wellbeing, home care is also good for people's mental and emotional health and wellbeing. Mental and emotional wellbeing is closely linked with the feeling of independence and having a say in the decisions that affect your life.

Flexible schedule

We understand that flexible work schedules are becoming more popular as the way we live our lives changes. Does your life or schedule mean you can only dedicate a few hours a week? No problem. Contracts are flexible and can based on anything between 10 hours and 40 hours per week. So, if you can only offer one long shift of 10 hours per week, or two 5 hour shift days per week, we will still be delighted to hear from you. 

Work with interesting people and build relationships

All of our clients have a story to tell. Elderly clients have vast life experiences be it having had an interesting and successful career before retirement, living through fascinating events that have made history, or losing loved ones. Those who live with disability often have very different experiences of normal everyday occurrences such as going to school, college, university, travelling or simply going shopping. And those recovering from serious life changing injuries may be adjusting to a new normal which has seen the life they knew change vastly.

We can learn so much about, and from, others. In turn, this can help bring more depth, empathy, openness, and appreciation into our own lives.

Not only this, but the very nature of this role is to form close and trusting relationships with those who need your help. If you enjoy being around people and aren't phased by meeting new people, then this could be a great job choice for you.

Ongoing growth and professional development

There are opportunities to progress through the ranks in home care and/or healthcare if that is something that interests you. You may get the opportunity to go on to deliver complex and specialist care to clients. This would be for people who need palliative care or care following a serious injury. Experience like this is invaluable and may open doors for you to progress elsewhere in the home care and/or healthcare sector.

Deliver complex care in home setting

When we think of complex care, we often associate it with a hospital location. However, the ability to deliver specialist care in a home setting is welcome for many reasons. Not only does it mean that the client may live in the comfort of their own home for as long as is safely possible. It also means you gain care experience in a diverse role which allows you to move around different locations. You don't have to be in one location all day as you will get the flexibility of being able to travel around the Island. This can help add to the diversity of your role.

Home care sector is booming as the population ages

The aging population is projected to grow significantly in Jersey. This means that the home care sector has guaranteed growth, career development, and job safety prospects in the coming years.

Access to the latest technology

One of the key aides in home care is 'Telecare' and digital technology for online care management. Telecare involves use of the latest technologies to offer remote monitoring and support to the elderly, disabled, and vulnerable people who receive care at home so that they can live independently. Importantly, this does not replace face-to-face visits. What it does do though is provide a safety net to alert in the event of a problem. It can also provide health-related data to prevent and diagnose health issues early.
