Prison library services and reading support

What we offer

We offer a wide range of books, magazines and CDs that prisoners can use or borrow, including:

  • fiction, graphic novels, magazines and CDs
  • biographies, history and local history books
  • textbooks to support education and courses
  • books on arts, crafts, music, hobbies, sports and fitness
  • foreign books

We can also provide newspapers and DVDs that are not available to borrow from the library (eg driving theory and graphic design).

Our reference section has information about Jersey laws and prison policies and we offer careers advice with the help of Skills Jersey.

Projects prisoners can contribute to

We encourage prisoners to get involved in projects and programmes, such as:

  • book reviews
  • reading groups
  • reading challenges
  • books on prescription: our doctors can recommend books to help prisoners manage medical conditions
  • Storybook Dads (and Mums): prisoners can make a recording of themselves reading a story, which we edit and send onto their children on CD
  • linking libraries: we encourage prisoners to continue reading after leaving prison. We can organise an appointment for an introduction to the Jersey Library
  • ECDL (European Computer Driving Licence): teaches prisoners basic computer skills
